Michele's Eulogy for Howard Pulver

I'd like to say a few things about my dad, an extraordinary man. His life was filled with acts of kindness and generosity. I always found it to be quite ironic that his name Howard means "Protector" and that was exactly what he did, protect. While he strived to protect us from the harsh realities of life he knew that it was an impossible task. Therefore he strove to teach each of us, according to our individual needs and styles, how to deal with reality. He was a private man who was not only great in stature, but also in his incredible knowledge and unbelievable insight. This combination of knowledge and insight, helped him to teach us his edicts of life. I'd like to share my favorite ones with you.

1. Never worry. Worrying is a waste of time and energy. My dad encouraged us to figure out what the problem was and fix it. If you can't fix it, then have the strength to leave it alone and move on.

2. The Three phone call rule. Any question can be answered in three telephone calls. When I was in 6th grade - I had the chicken pox and my Dad decided that I needed a project to take my mind off my troubles. So he handed me the phone book and said, "Here. I want you to find us a motorhome to rent for 10 days this summer. Here's a list of all the requirements for the motorhome." Much to my amazement, in three phone calls, I found the perfect motorhome - the fact that I didn't have a driver's license and I was eleven years old did not seem to phase anyone!

3. Don't let them aggravate you - you aggravate them. This rule applies mostly to contractors but it does work in other areas!

4. When all else fails read the instructions.

5. Never underestimate the power of hot glue!

6. This is a two part rule. Murphy's Law and Schwartz's Law. Murphy's Law is - Whatever can go wrong will go wrong. Schwartz's Law is - Murphy was an optimist.

7. Recognize that the person who can say, "I'm not sure, but I will find out for you," is a smart person.

8. Probably the most important, is: Be self reliant. Learn to trust your instincts by keeping on top of things and keeping up with the ever changing world.

I really miss you dad. I have always considered you to be a Renaissance man. I know that your tremendous spirit and love of life and learning will live on in all of us. "Your candle burned out long before your legend ever will," is from a song Elton John wrote, but it really applies to you.

I love you dad.
